m4 Award

Create the future of medicine!

With the m4 Award, the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (StMWi) supports academic research projects in the field of biomedicine.

Up to five teams receive a maximum of 500,000 euros for up to 2 years. This is intended to ensure the ability to obtain follow-up funding. All award-winning projects also receive intensive project support on the way to founding a company.

Main topics

• Innovative active ingredients and therapies (including NCEs, biologicals, ATMPs, vaccines)
• Innovative platform technologies in the field of prediction, prognostics or diagnostics in biotechnology
  (including approaches based on the application of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning)
• Innovative platform technologies in the field of drug discovery and development (including
  approaches based on the application of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning).
• Innovative approaches in the field of digital health in biotechnology (especially if there is potential in terms of
  reimbursement by health insurance providers under the Digital Healthcare Act DVG).

Selection criteria

For a successful application, the research work must fulfill the following conditions:

• A viable business model and clear spin-off potential
• High innovation potential and technical-scientific originality
• Clear unique selling points compared to the competition
• Positive property rights situation
• Committed and qualified team with a fundamental willingness to found a company
• Considerable technical and scientific risk
• Connectivity at the end of the funding period
