BayTOU: A boost for technology-oriented start-ups and young companies in Bavaria

The innovative strength of young companies is a key driver of economic growth and technological development. With the BayTOU funding program, the Free State of Bavaria supports pre-seed start-ups and young businesses engaged in future-oriented technology sectors. The program targets start-ups and young companies aiming to develop new products, processes, or technical services.

What is BayTOU?

BayTOU stands for the “Bavarian Program for the Promotion of Technology-Oriented Business Start-ups” and aims to stimulate innovative business creation. The program specifically supports projects that offer clear competitive advantages and market opportunities through technical innovations. At the same time, BayTOU helps create highly skilled jobs and strengthen the competitiveness of Bavaria’s economy.

Who is eligible for funding?

The program is aimed at:

• Entrepreneurs planning to establish a technology-oriented company.
• Young companies in the commercial sector that meet the SME criteria (small and medium-sized enterprises), have been in existence for less than six years, and have fewer than ten full-time employees.

Another key criterion: The project must primarily be carried out in Bavaria.

How does the funding work?

BayTOU funds projects in two phases:

1. Concept phase
   In this phase, a technological concept for the business startup is developed. Up to 35% of eligible costs can be funded, with a maximum amount of €26,000.
2. Development projects
   During the actual development of new technologies, products, or services, up to 45% of eligible costs can be covered. For software development projects, the maximum funding amount is €150,000.

Funding is provided as grants that do not need to be repaid.

What are the requirements?

To benefit from BayTOU, applicants must have the necessary technical expertise. Additionally, the project must demonstrate significant technical innovations with potential market opportunities.
